英文簡介 : The construction of Huang's Mansion in Qingshui Township was completed in 1929 during the Japanese rule period. Its owner and founder, Huang Ru-zhou was appointed as Chief of Sankuaicuo and Mayor of Xikuaicuo during the Japanese rule period. His son ran the rice and grain business very successfully. Very fond of the buildings on Minquan Street, Sanxia District, New Taipei City, they decided to build up their own houses in a similar way. The traditional courtyard houses were designed with two entrances and two Fulongs. Huang's Mansion has an extremely wide front courtyard with a pond in a half-moon shape. After the first entrance, the pillars, arches, and gables were decorated in a mixture of Chinese and Western architectural styles. Rooms after the second entrance were decorated in a traditional Taiwanese style, but traces of Japanese and Western architectural styles can be still detected on the wall stickers, white tiles, structure, veranda, and roofs, witnessing the influence of foreign culture at the time.

The entire structure of Huang's Mansion was mainly timber-framed but its walls were constructed in either the earth structure or the brick structure, all revealing the most exquisite architectural decorative techniques from the Japanese rule period. The wood carvings were finely crafted. All the paintings were drawn by Liu Pei, the painter who also painted the Wufeng Lin Family, by perspective techniques that had been newly “imported” from the Western painting at the time. The couplets at the first entrance were embossed in washed granolithic finish while all the other couplets were incised first and then filled with black glass sand, a technique only seen here among all the private houses in Taichung City.

Reasons for nomination: (1) Huang's Mansion was a residence for the upper-class elite during the Japanese rule period, witnessed the Japanese construction methods and materials of the time, and demonstrated a mixture of Taiwanese, Japanese, and Western architectural styles. It is a precious cultural asset worth preserving. (2) Huang's Mansion has a complete architectural pattern, is finely constructed, and is significant in local development history and cultural and artistic value.
