Rui Cheng Tong

英文簡介 : The Rui Cheng Tong was constructed during the late Qing Dynasty and added with Hulong (protection halls) and the entrance tower in 1927 during the Japanese rule period. Serving as the former residence of Mr. Huang Qing-jiang, the then Chief of Nantun District of Datun County, the Rui Cheng Tong was composed of traditional courtyard houses with an entrance tower and surrounded by thorn bamboo forests as protection halls. Its towering main buildings were decorated with elegant and refined arch-shaped roofs and colorful painting.

During the Japanese rule period, a large number of local architects introduced and applied to their contemporary buildings the Western architectural and decorative elements, which were also shown on the lower parts of the wooden pillars of Rui Cheng Tong to beautify the construction and prevent the wood foundation from being eroded by summer rain and high humidity in Taiwan.

Located on No. 3, Yongjhen Lane, Nantun District, Taichung City, the Rui Cheng Tong happened to sit on the main road of the re-adjustment zone of Taiwan High Speed Rail New Town. To solve the controversy, the Taichung City Government called a meeting on July 11, 2011 to review whether to list it as a monument. Another cultural asset review committee meeting was called again on September 9, 2011, in which the Rui Cheng Tong was specified as a historic site for preservation. Unexpectedly, some suspects broke into the Rui Cheng Tong and destroyed its entrance, inner walls, and the first veranda of main building in the early hours of September 20, 2011. The case has been handled for post-disaster clean-up and security in accordance with the Emergency Measures Governing the Management of Historic Monuments and Historic Buildings.

The latest development of the ""Rui Cheng Tong"" case is published on the website of Cultural Affairs Bureau of Taichung City Government. Interested parties are welcome to visit the following URL for query.
