Zhang Tian-ji's mansion in Houli

英文簡介 : A major earthquake hit central Taiwan in 1935, destroying a majority of buildings in Houli but causing only very minor damage to the mansion of Zhang Tian-ji, which was again only partially damaged by the earthquake taking place on September 21, 1999, with most of its main body remaining intact.

Reasons for nomination:

(1) Historical, cultural, and artistic value: The mansion is a witness of construction history in Dongshi and Houli. It has special features in architectural space and decoration. Its entrance tower was built in a Western style while the two layers of rooms were constructed and decorated very differently. The washbasins and the seats in the hallways were beautifully designed. The bricks, the wood carving on the glass window frames, the paintings, and the three-dimensional couplets were made with beautiful and exquisite workmanship. It is a very rare private house. (2) Demonstration of contemporary architectural techniques and fashions: The generally well-preserved mansion reflects a mixture of Taiwanese, Japanese, and Western architectural patterns, witnessing the fashion and the trend to fuse traditional architecture with Western architecture. The mansion was a very high-quality private residence established during the Japanese rule period, thus witnessing the construction technology and quality of that era, too.
(3) Scarcity: The mansion survived from the earthquake in 1935 and then the 921 earthquake in 1999. It is one of the few buildings with a mixture of Taiwanese, Japanese, and Western architectural patterns. It is worthy of preservation and research.
